Lately the keywords "Google" and "Play Store" have been trending among Indonesian users. It's not about a new app or a promo — it's because Google has officially rolled out a new rule about who's allowed to distribute Android apps, and Indonesia is one of the first countries affected.
What's Happening?
Starting September 30, 2026, Google is requiring every Android app developer to complete an identity verification process before their apps can be installed or updated on certified Android devices. According to the Android Developers Blog, the rule takes effect first in four countries — Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand — before expanding worldwide in 2027.
Not Just About Play Store
What makes this different from earlier Play Store policies is that the verification applies across every participating app store, not just Google Play. According to The Hacker News, the participating stores include Google Play, Samsung's Galaxy Store, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Palm Store, V-Appstore, and GetApps. Developers must submit their legal name, address, email, and phone number to keep their apps installable on those devices.
Why Is Google Doing This?
The main reason is security. According to ANTARA News, Google claims apps distributed through unofficial channels (sideloading) carry more than 50 times the malware risk compared to apps distributed through Google Play. By requiring identity verification, Google hopes to cut down on financial fraud, data theft, and abuse from developers hiding behind fake identities.
Will Your Phone Be Affected?
If your phone is a certified Android device — which covers nearly every official Android phone sold in Indonesia — starting September 30, 2026 you'll only be able to install apps from verified developers. That doesn't mean you're completely locked out, though: advanced users can still install apps from unverified developers via ADB or a special "advanced flow," as long as they accept the risk upfront.
